Who do you currently play hockey in Europe for?

Play hockey in Hungary for DEAC in Erste Liga.

For you, what's a favorite part about playing hockey in Europe?

My favourite part about playing hockey in Europe is definitely the fans, but also the opportunity to experience different environments around the world that without the game you would most likely not get the opportunity to do so.

I think most players can agree that there is nothing more exciting than playing in front of a sold out rink. It’s a completely different atmosphere here with the fans chanting throughout the game and I believe it’s something everyone should take the opportunity to experience if they have the chance to do so.

How many seasons of pro have you played hockey in Europe to date?

Off of the ice, express how your experience of living in this country has been. What is everyday life like outside of the rink?

Adapting to the different cultures at first can be a little intimidating but you just have to go into it with an open mind and once you get more familiar with your environment it gets a lot easier.

The language barrier can be tough at times but we’re definitely lucky nowadays with the translation apps, they’re a lifesaver.

It’s great in Hungary because you get three national breaks throughout the season and during that time it gives you an opportunity to travel and experience more of the country and even other countries that aren’t too far away. The current pandemic is obviously making it more difficult to travel and for fans to attend the games but it’s not going to last forever and I’m sure when they’re allowed back they will be more excited than ever.

In your words, how would you describe the style and level of play in Erste Liga?

There are teams in every league that play a different style and are built differently but I'd describe it as more of a puck possession game. It is not nearly as physical as the past leagues I’ve played in within North America but the bigger ice surface can take some time to adapt to.

It gives players more space to be creative with and without the puck.

How many import hockey players are allowed per team in the league? How was it playing there with the other imports on/off the ice?

There are six imports allowed in the Erste Liga.

If you have the opportunity available to play with a fellow countryman or another North American I would highly recommend it. Whether it is their first year or tenth it can make the transition a lot easier whether it’s on or off the ice.

Favorite personal story or two of yours from playing the game of hockey in Europe?

One of my favourites occurred in a grocery store with a fellow North American. Grocery stores can always be a bit of a hard time, with foreign labels and especially if you have to ask a question to an employee who doesn’t speak a bit of English.

We were in there one day looking for steak and had no luck in the isles so we went to the deli. We asked the lady behind the counter for steak and she had no clue what we were trying to say. Next thing I knew my friend was “moo-ing” at the lady and that got her attention, she finally figured out what we meant. She probably thought we were a bit nuts but I think having that care free attitude can be helpful.

Which country/region do you currently reside in during the off season? What do you enjoy most during the summer months while you are in the off-season?

I spend my summers in Calgary AB, Canada.

Being back with my family and friends is the most enjoyable and refreshing part of the summer. I’m always looking forward to the annual golf trip in Eureka, Montana with my buddies and of course nothing beats finishing off a great summer day with a bonfire.

Last question: What's a favorite word/phrase you learned (or like using) in the foreign language where you played?

Egészségére - meaning cheers when drinking, when a meal is served (may it serve your health), bless you.
