Play hockey in a country famous for la dolce vita (the sweet life).

Italy's hockey scene is concentrated in the stunning Alpine north, where mountain culture meets Mediterranean passion.

The food is incredible (no ones surprised here), the history is rich, the landscapes are beautiful, and the lifestyle in second to none. The pace here is different from what many import players are used to, but honestly, that's exactly the point.

Ex-pat Friendliness:

Moderate
English is spoken in tourist areas and larger cities, but learning Italian is important for daily life. Italians are warm and expressive, and import players find that effort to communicate is always appreciated as they get settled in a new place to play hockey.

Cost of Living:

Moderate
Cost of living can be slightly higher in the main cities and tourist destinations, but it's fairly moderate throughout the rest of the country.

Weather/Climate:

Alpine & Coast Mix
Mediterranean climate in most regions with mild wet winters and hot dry summers. Alpine north naturally has cold winters (28-38°F/-2 to 3°C). The weather really varies by region.

Proximity of Travel:

Mediterranean Access

Slovenia, Switzerland, Austria, and others are close by.

Weekend trips to Croatia, France, or southern Germany (just to name a few) are easy for players to make in and out of seasons.

Hockey Culture:

Established

Italian hockey is concentrated in the North, where the sport has strong regional roots.

It's not a national phenomenon, but in the hockey regions, the passion and tradition run deep.

Leagues

In Italy, the main league is called the Italian Hockey League (Series A).

Underneath this, you have a similarly named Italian Hockey League but it's Italy2. A number of top Alps Hockey League clubs are based in Italy as well. There's also IHL Division 1 which sits below the main pro tiers.

Italian youth (Italy U16) and junior hockey tiers (U19) are established as well.
